Whitewell Defenders, North Belfast – 20-09-08

On a fine sunny day we headed over to the White City in Whitewell to support not only the host band but the local people in the small besieged estate surrounded on 3 sides by Nationalists.

I heard that the final total of bands was around 25; not great by any means; anyway there where good numbers of spectators watching at various points around the estate decked out in their gardens and they certainly enjoyed the bands on parade.

The Ulster Grenadiers where out in their brilliant white jackets certainly catch the eye as do Sons of Ulster from the Shankill Road and the South Belfast Young Conquers.

Loads of Blood & Thunder bands on show in this great weather; this parade is short and finishes at the community hall where the burger and drink stall does a roaring trade! Always good to support this parade then estate makes everyone welcome!

Today we walked with 11 side drummers and a flute corps of 21; not a bad turnout on a Saturday afternoon for an end of season parade. We played okay but the main aim was to support this parade and the local people.

The judges awarded us with most of the first prizes at this event; well done to the Whitewell and well done to the locals for welcoming all the bands and spectators into your community.

No Surrender!
